Calculating Your BMR

In order to calculate your BMR you need to provide details about your gender, age, height and weight. It is similar to the BMI calculator only you provide slightly more information. The reason you need to provide your age is because as you get older your BMR decreases.

Basically we burn energy no matter what we are doing. So whether you wash the car, walk the dog, sit down watching television or simply sleep – you are burning energy doing all of those things. Obviously the more active that you are, the more energy you will burn. When you work out your BMR you are simply finding out how much energy you burn when you are resting.

If you are looking to lose weight then finding out your BMR will not really aid you very much. It is simply better to know your BMR for curiosity reasons rather than health reasons. However, you can still use your BMR results to see whether you need to be more active during the day. For example, if you have a high BMR then it means you already burn off quite a lot of energy even when you are resting. That means you will not need to do as much exercise throughout the day as somebody with a low BMR would.

Finding out your BMI can be interesting too. It can give you the motivation that you need to lose weight. Obesity is a really bad problem within the United States and it is known to be the second leading cause of preventable deaths each year. So if you have a high BMI then the chances of you developing a number of health problems is extremely high.

By using our free BMR calculator you will be able to get a good idea of how your metabolic rate works. However it might be slightly generalised so it is not always as accurate as you might imagine. Just keep this in mind and remember that working out your BMR with our free BMR calculator mainly helps you to understand how active you need to be to burn off energy.
